What is the difference between PCSIB and the Department of Agriculture, What roles do they play?

The Pest Control Service Industries Board is an accreditated FET private college where the qualification of pest control is presented and achieved. the Departement of Agriculture is the Governmental body who governs the industry in conjunction to Act 36 of 1947.

Once the qualification is achieved through the PCSIB, the applicant applies with the Departement for the P-registration status which is the only legal way in which any Pest Control Operator is allowed to do business.

What is the fields of limitation when I have only a Structural P-nr which I obtained by doing the Skills course?

When your P-registration certificate specifies – “Structural Pest Control”, you are limited to the normal household pests e.g. cockroaches, ants, flies, fleas, rats, mice, mosquitoes etc (NQF 2). You cannot for example do fumigation, because you need to have a qualification in a specialized field to be able to do the fumigation (NQF4). The NQF 2 is a Structural Skills course which runs over 3 days where as the NQF4 is an 18 month correspondence course.

Can I get a P-number when I have done the Structural Skills course?

Yes, when you have done your Structural Skills course, you will receive a competency certificate. The Department of Agriculture requires you to work under supervision of a qualified pest control operator for a minimum of 6 months to qualify for your P-certificate.

How can I cross over from the Skill Course to the long course?

When you have done the Skills course, you get credited on the long course for modules 1-6. You then need to do the bridging modules 7, 8, and 9 and one of the second phase specialized modules to get the NQF4 certificate.

What is the procedure to get more fields on my P-certificate?

You enroll for the NQF4 course on phase 2 only, hand in a copy of your P-registration certificate and pay the required course fee. You will then, on passing the theory exam, get practically assessed on the specialized module and receive a competency certificate. You then apply to Department of Agriculture for the addition to your P-nr together with the relevant experience affidavits.

How does a student obtain the 6 months practical experience which is needed to get your P-number?

To be able to qualify for your P-number at the Department of Agriculture, you need to have at least six months practical experience. You can obtain that experience by working under supervision of a qualified pest control operator full time or part time or in service of a pest control company.

What is the difference between STRUCTURAL pest control and other specialized fields. (people think if they have structural pest control, they can treat termites or do fumigation)

Structural Pest Control is basic pest control eg. cockroaches, ants, rodents, fleas etc.

To specialize in any field eg. termites or fumigation the module on that specific specializing field needs to be done.

For example any person with the qualification Structural Pest Control cannot treat termites or fumigate any premises.
